At some point, exhaustion took over and I ended up falling asleep on the couch. When I woke, I found a blanket had been tossed over me and two angry-looking dudes were staring at me.

“Can I help the two of you?”

Spencer and Mason shared a look that didn’t bode well for me.

“What did you do last night?” Mason asked.

“Well, I had a break down that Blake prevented from spiraling out of control. Then, I talked with you, I changed, I peed, I tried to sleep, but—”

Mason grunted. “Not what I meant, Siren, and you know it.”

My brow lifted. “Maybe you should be more specific. What exactly would you like to know?”

“You’re insufferable.” Mason stormed off to his room. Then, I was left alone with Spencer, which was perfect. He had information I needed.

“What happened with Anthony?” I asked before he could say anything about Jaxon. These guys were worse than women when it came to overprotectiveness.

His hazel eyes watched me suspiciously, but he finally answered. “After the warden took Hawk with the guards, I stayed behind. Your cell isn’t clean by any means, but I did take his body outside and made a call. I have a friend who is fae and will make sure Anthony gets back to his family.”

Relief coursed through me. “Thank you so much. It really means a lot. He didn’t deserve what happened to him.”

“Most people usually don’t, but you need to understand something. This is why we made you an outcast. You can’t have friends here. Friends are liabilities in this prison unless they can offer something in return. I know that sounds harsh, but it’s a reality you need to take seriously. The four of us work, because nobody can beat us. Anthony never stood a chance trying to protect you and be your friend.”

His words hit me hard in the chest. The Fabled Four were brothers and I didn’t belong here, yet I was stuck with them until I found a way to escape and stay hidden or did what the warden wanted until he no longer had a use for me.

Neither of those things I would be able to do on my own, making me unsure of where to go from there. Between Blake’s threat just a few hours before and Spencer’s words this morning, I was beginning to second guess my absurd need to figure out Jaxon.

Spencer continued, “I’m not saying we won’t protect you. Hawk already made it clear we would do so, but the least you can do is make it easier on us. Listen to what we have to say and try to trust we’re only doing our best to help you. Even when it doesn’t seem like it.”

Ha. It very rarely seemed like it, but I did take his words to heart. Though a small part of me still wondered if I just needed to do what the warden wanted, leave the Fabled Four alone, and worry about surviving on my own. That thought process had
